"So what would you say if I wanted to start our own nursery business?" Kyle casually said to me with a nervous grin. "You want to do WHAT?" I replied with a giggle and then flashed an inquisitive brow his way. "Tell me more".
That is how it started...my husbands dream to start a business and grow stuff evolved into the realization of my dream to sell stuff to people that makes them happy. We were city kids working 9-5's and trying to support a family of three lovely little ladies. Then one "what if" turned into finding property, investors, and lots and lots and LOTS of blood sweat and tears.
My husband Kyle had been working in the nursery industry for 12 years when we had started the wholesale nursery in 2018. I, on the other hand, had zero experience in growing plants. I had been working in an office environment for the past ten years so my contribution to our new business venture was administrative, business strategy, and finance. I continued to work my full-time job and did most of the administrative work in the evenings.
In October of 2019, I thought it would be fun to convert one of the greenhouses into a retail garden center where people could visit and purchase plants directly from the grower. That time of the year we had mostly mums for sale, but we did start to get a few customers here and there. Then came 2020. Life as we knew it had completely changed and maybe forever! We soon realized that we needed to make some changes to our business model to be able to serve our customers and keep them safe. We started a website and a Facebook page for the retail business so that we could offer online sales with delivery or curbside pick-up. I left my full-time employment at the end of 2020 and have been focusing on our business ever since. In 2021, we started an Etsy account and obtained our shipping licenses from the ODA. We now ship all over the United States.
Our daughter Hailey has also stepped into entrepreneurship by starting her own business called Mizz Millie's Farm. Her employees are an unruly bunch of animals...no seriously...they are literally animals. The business is named after our goat herd matriarch, Millie. Hailey breeds and sells rabbits and goats. She tends our chicken flock and sells farm fresh eggs. She also uses the goats milk that she collects from the herd to make goats milk soap! She is finishing up her degree in Agriculture Science at OSU and works for us doing propagation.
While having a business is a lot of hard work, it is so rewarding to do something you love. I love connecting with people from all over the country and helping them to beautify their home and garden. We look forward to continuing to grow with you and create the most beautiful landscapes!
